The Swaylands Estate, Penshurst, Kent
In 1906 Country Life depicted the Swaylands Estate as “Placed amid beautiful scenery, which at this joyous season is clothed with the flowers and tender green of early summer, is the residence of Mr George Drummond. It is near to the hamlet of Penshurst, and is approached . . . by lanes that run over hill and through dale, with here and there rose-covered cottages set in apple orchards pink with bloom.”
Swaylands House was built in 1842 by William Woodgate. However after it was purchased in 1877 by London banker George Drummond visits were recorded by Edward V11 and his daughter in law, the later Queen Mary.
Drummond extended the estate to 900 acres and created, at the time, the largest rockery in Europe, bringing large sandstone boulders from Devon by horse and cart to cover an area of five acres including lakes and waterfalls. Reports say that his nanny, Iga Hogflesh, would push his children around the rockery every day in a large scarlett pram embossed with a giant D. The rockery exists to date, along with an old Tee from Drummonds golf course, a natural spring, a ha-ha, tennis court, gymnasium, and former cricket pitch with a listed sandstone pavilion.
There are now three buildings on the estate, the Grade II listed Swaylands House and two new buildings – Drummond Hall and Woodgate Manor.
